Braiding knowledges for large mammal ecology research

Like most other taxa, numerous large mammal species are experiencing population declines, and the reasons for these declines are often not fully understood. Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Holders possess extensive knowledge handed down over generations and/or gathered over decades of personal experience, which is highly relevant to the conservation of wildlife, including moose, wolves, caribou, and beyond. In partnership with Indigenous nations across the lands commonly referred to as Canada, we respectfully braid diverse knowledge systems together to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing large mammal population fluctuations, spatial ecology, and species connections to cultural integrity.
